Finding a passion for planning
Dory Butcher, a natural planner, likes seeing a campaign and a project grow and develop and then, eventually, go out into the world. “It’s just cool to be a part of that,” she says.
"
That’s how she describes her internship in account management with King Fish Media. She says the experience allowed her to be an integral part in a project’s process—beginning to end. With the company, she assisted other account managers with client correspondence and managed project schedules and campaigns. But, this interest in account management wasn’t always there, “I didn’t even know account management was a part of marketing,” says Butcher, a marketing and communications major. So, when an Endicott alumna and now employee of King Fish Media, encouraged her to apply to the position, Butcher was hearing about account management for the very first time. But, she’s glad she did.
Her responsibilities came like second-nature to her and the small size and collaborative team structure of the company allowed her to get her hands on things ranging from creative briefs to social media campaigns. She says, as an intern, she was quickly immersed in the company’s collaborative structure. Butcher explains, “We all communicated and negotiated together. It made us feel more part of the company.” She stresses that her internship experience gave her the freedom to take on projects and client tasks as if she were a full-time employee.
She explains that she is happy she could help the company maintain strong client relationships and grow more client accounts during her time with King Fish Media. She says, “There are actual clients and businesses depending on you, so it teaches you a lot and you have to be accountable.”
