On March 25, President Steven R. DiSalvo, Ph.D., welcomed the Gulls back from spring break with a surprise ribbon-cutting ceremony that heralded the arrival of Sal’s Pizza to Callahan Dining Hall.

The Boston-based pizza chain found its new home on campus with a little help from President DiSalvo, who told the crowd of students, faculty, and staff that when he met founder Sal Lupino, they immediately talked about food, their Italian heritage, and “the importance of what it means to gather around the table.”

“And by the end of the conversation, I said, ‘You know, Sal, we have students that come to our dining room every single day to gather, talk, and eat. And it’s important to create unity when you have good food—and we would love to have Sal’s Pizza at Endicott College,’” President DiSalvo recalled.

Lupoli opened his first Sal’s Pizza with his brother Nick, in Salem, N.H. in 1990. Inspired by Boston’s North End eateries, the Lupoli brothers used fresh ingredients, prepared their dough daily, and established a reputation for the best quality.

“The students all deserve the best food and the best service that we can provide,” said Paul J. Belski, General Manager of Sodexo Campus Services, who also spoke at the event.

Lupoli said his food is made from fresh ingredients, without preservatives, with cheeses that are freshly grated daily, and with dough that’s also made fresh daily and will be delivered to Endicott each morning. “The best times in your life are around the dinner table,” Lupoli told the community. “On behalf of my family, on behalf of our company, I appreciate this opportunity to expand—especially at this unbelievable location that the president allowed to happen.”
