Endicott Dance & Visual Arts Production, Armations: Anthropocene, Ponders the Future
Endicott College visual artists and the Endicott Repertory Dance Ensemble present a visual/dance production investigating the anthropogenic epoch as a transformative time in history—one that recognizes significant human impact on the Earth. Celebrating 10 years of collaboration, Cynthia Roberts, professor of fine arts, and Nicole Sao Pedro-Welch, head dance coordinator, present Armations: Anthropocene, an Endicott Repertory Dance Ensemble production.
Through the convergence of dance, visual art, and sound, the performance will explore urgency, bliss, and false bliss, as well as the impact of technology and human activity on our ecosystems, species, and interactions. The production will take audiences on an unexpected journey combining the familiar with a parallel universe that one day could be our reality.
The production features choreography by Sao Pedro-Welch performed by the Endicott Repertory Dance Ensemble; colorful, sound-interactive animations, hand-drawn dance outfits, and audience member programs that you will have to see to believe by Roberts; striking sculptural elements by visual artist Miles Warner; and an original score composed by Boston-based dancer, choreographer, and musician, Tyler Catanella.
“We love exploring the intersection between the innate beautiful design of our planet and how humans interact with it—enjoying it, overpowering it, harnessing it,” note Pedro-Welch and Roberts. “The dance and the visual elements ask the audience to consider: if humans are ‘in charge,’ how should we move forward? How do we interact with each other, the planet, and its biodiversity and resources?”
Armations: Anthropocene will be held in Tia’s Black Box Theater at the Walter J. Manninen Center for the Arts. Showtimes include Thursday, April 25 through Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m., and a matinee Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m.
