Students entering the School of Communication at Endicott College can choose from four majors and one concentration that will provide entry into the multi-faceted field of modern communication. State-of-the-art technology, knowledgeable faculty, and high academic standards combine to produce graduates prepared to enter the ever-changing fields of communication. Endicott's commitment to keeping on top of the latest technology used in the field is evidenced in the Scangas Center for Media and Learning. The Scangas Center is a complete digital production facility that includes a high definition television studio and five nonlinear editing suites in the post-production area.
Majors and concentration in the School reflect the diversity of the field of Communication. Students in the Digital Film Making concentration focus on the aesthetics of a variety of media and get hands-on experience producing video projects beginning their first semester on campus. Students who major in Internet Studies explore the many ways the internet has become embedded in our lives. Students who opt for the Marketing Communication major take a variety of classes that touch all aspects of this complex industry, including public relations and integrated marketing. Digital Journalism students will focus not only on traditional print based news, but also work with new technologies to generate journalistic podcasts, blogs, and streaming media. The impact this profession has on society from a historical and current event perspective is central to this major. Through their course work, students pursuing a BS in Communication explore the many ways media impacts the individual and society, locally and internationally. Because Communication is a more general major, students also do hands-on work in their communication course work.
Communication graduates leave Endicott with a full toolbox of skills that enable them to enter a variety of fields. After graduation, Digital Film Making students start careers in the broadcast industry, or work for private production houses. The Internet Studies major prepares students to become professionals that, because of their knowledge of the internet, out-compete their peers in the marketplace. Marketing Communication graduates gain employment at international advertising firms or in the PR departments of a variety of businesses. While Digital Journalism students may find placement at traditional newspapers, most will go on to the exciting field of online publishing.
Students who pursue the BS in Communication will find they are prepared for traditional communication-related positions; and, as with the other communication degrees, possess the skills to move directly into a program of advanced studies and graduate school. Students who major in Internet Studies take a wide variety of courses that cover the theoretical and hands-on applications of this emerging field. We understand that the professional world needs people that have a true understanding of the internet, especially in the many fields that fall under the communication umbrella. Students in this major will be prepared for internships and careers in a wide variety of industries; they will have the expertise to provide guidance in what has become today, a ubiquitous and necessary mode of communication.
Students in the School of Communication are provided with a solid academic background that promotes written and critical thinking skills, as well as theoretical and applied knowledge. Graduates will find themselves in a position to take leadership roles in any of the disciplines aligned with the field of communication. The ever-evolving School of Communication provides four exciting and demanding majors and the concentration in Digital Film Making that are a starting point for a career in our dynamic, ever changing world.
Opportunities for intense, professional application in individual interest areas are available through a series of internships including the semester-long internship and the senior thesis in the final year. Students in the Digital Film Making concentration may opt to do a hands-on thesis project in their senior year. ECTV, the College’s 24-hour, closed circuit cable television and radio network, is available to showcase student productions, including news broadcasts.
