Oceanographic Sampling in Gloucester

09/24/2012

On September 18, 2012, Professor Mari Butler and her Principles of Oceanography class took a trip to Gloucester to take part in some oceanographic sampling on board Gloucester Maritime Heritage’s schooner Ardelle.  Even though high winds kept the researchers in the harbor with the sails furled, they still managed to collect a variety of hydrographic data including pH, turbidity, salinity, temperature, specific gravity, and dissolved oxygen at three different depths.  The data will be added to a long term data set looking at human impact on the harbor.  They also sampled phytoplankton and lowered a camera to observe organisms living on the bottom.   Ardelle proved to be an excellent platform for conducting research and a great time was had by all!  On a separate note, Captain Harold Burnham and Ardelle are scheduled to sail to Washington, DC where he will be a recipient of  the 2012 National heritage Fellowship Award.
